Cordelia Stevenson

Actor. Director. Clown. Theatre-maker. Facilitator. Producer. Plonker.

Hello! I’m Cordelia (she/her) –

A theatre-maker from North Yorkshire – via London – now based in Merseyside.

I’m interested in live performance that is equal parts riotous and ridiculous, playful and political.

Following my training at Goldsmiths, University of London, I co-founded the critically acclaimed devising company Silent Faces. Together we create physical and political theatre that tackles big issues with humour and heart.

My work has received critical praise from publications including The Guardian, The Stage, The Scotsman and The Spectator, and has been supported by Arts Council England, The Cockayne Foundation, Garfield Weston, The Pleasance, Camden People’s Theatre, New Diorama and Unity Theatre, Liverpool.

I am currently working on my first full length solo show - Renaissance - alongside developing new character comedy / clowning acts for mixed-bill and cabaret nights.

Three Weeks on Godot is a Woman

In my work I return again and again to clowning and play-based practice as radical, empowering and intrinsically political theatrical forms. I am a firm believer that clowning can be transformational for marginalised communities. This sits at the heart of my teaching practice.

As a facilitator and workshop leader I have over a decade of experience, working with organisations and institutions including the National Theatre, Sheffield Theatres, Cambridge Junction, Jacksons Lane, 20 Stories High, Goldsmiths University of London and the University of York. In my teaching I specialise in political theatre, clowning and play, drawing on my training in Michael Chekhov technique, alongside further study with leading international clown teachers such as John Wright, Nola Rae and Phil Burgers (Dr. Brown).
